As measured by A.M. Best, the balance sheet strength assessment is based on its risk-adjusted capitalization being at the very strong level, while maintaining strong liquidity. A.M. Best’s assessment of operating performance considers Ohio National’s long-term positive trend in individual life insurance sales prior to the current disruptions driven by the COVID-19 pandemic, and stable GAAP-adjusted operating results, while the assessment of the group’s ERM recognizes its strong risk management framework, including front-end risk management practices and sound governance structure.

In its release, Moody’s noted “Ohio National has a large block of whole life business, a positive from a credit perspective, an aligned variable cost distribution and a consistent record of growing its life insurance sales.” It also referenced our actions to reduce exposure to our variable annuities with the guaranteed minimum income benefit (GMIB) and our prudent investment portfolio with minimal exposure to higher risk asset classes.

Fitch noted in its release that it “views Ohio National’s risk-adjusted capitalization as strong and based on YE 2019 data, Ohio National scores in the ‘Strong’ category of Fitch’s Prism capital model which is consistent with Fitch’s guidelines for companies rated in the ‘a’ category.” The release also stated, “Overall, Fitch views Ohio National’s portfolio to be well positioned relative to peers to weather an economic downturn.”
